Bomber Softball Splits Double Header with Empire 8 Foe St. John Fisher

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team (14-8, 4-2 Empire 8) split a pair of games in a double header Saturday afternoon against Empire 8 opponent St. John Fisher (17-9, 4-2 Empire 8) at Kostrinsky Field. The Bombers won the first game, which was shortened to five innings due to the scoring margin, 10-2, before falling 4-1 in the second game to the Cardinals. Ithaca returns to conference play Sunday hosting Nazareth for a double header at 1 p.m.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, senior Jen Biondi singled up the middle to bring home Francesca Busa. Rookie Brooke Powers blasted a two-run homer for a 3-1 lead at the end of the first. The Cardinals cut within 3-2 in the third before Powers again homered to right center, bringing home Biondi, for a 5-2 edge. Following a scoreless fourth, the Bombers collected five fifth-inning runs for the win. Freshman Krystalyn Yonklin scored on a Cardinal throwing error following a Lindsey Johnson bunt. Senior Molly O'Donnell stepped to the plate to hit the Bombers' third home run of the day. O'Donnell brought home Johnson and sophomore Nina Lindberg to lead 9-2. With the bases loaded, St. John Fisher walked Powers to score Busa and end the game.

Junior Sam Bender earned the victory on the mound for the Bombers. Pitching all five innings, she allowed just three hits with a trio of strikeouts.

Deadlocked 1-1 after six, the Cardinals tallied three runs in the top of the seventh – a performance the Bombers could not match. Fisher recorded 10 strike outs during game two, holding Ithaca to five hits.

The Cardinals scored the first in the fourth before Ithaca junior Sydney Folk brought home Busa in the sixth with a double to left field. In the top of the seventh, Fisher scored three runs with two outs en route to victory.

Busa had two hits for Ithaca. Julianne Vincent, Folk and freshman Casey Gavin each had one. Freshman Allison Macari pitched all seven innings for the Bombers.
