Second-Half Surge Leads #13 Bombers Past Rochester in Home Opener

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 13th-ranked Ithaca College women's basketball team (2-0) used 14 unanswered in the second half to power to a 74-61 victory over visiting Rochester (1-2) Wednesday night in Ben Light Gymnasium.

Ithaca snapped a 32-32 halftime deadlock outscoring Rochester 42-29 in the latter half to claim its second straight victory over the Yellowjackets.

The first half was knotted on seven occasions with neither team holding more than a four-point edge. The game was tied for the eighth and final time at the 14:40 mark of the second. A Jenn Escobido jumper a minute later tipped off a 14-0 Bomber run that took three minutes off the clock.

The Yellowjackets used a 7-1 stretch to pull within nine, 63-54, at 3:31, but the Bombers answered with five straight and held strong down the stretch for the double-digit win.

Escobido drained a team-high 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting and grabbed a game-best eight boards. Junior Francesca Cotrupe added 14 points and five boards, while senior Elisabeth Wentlent scored nine points. Senior Mary Kate Tierney had five assists and three steals to go with an eight-point performance.

The Bombers shot 45.1 percent from the floor in its home opener and outrebounded the Yellowjackets, 38-31.

The Bombers return to action Saturday when they travel to the Amherst Tournament to face Farmingdale State at 8 p.m.
