Mongelli Nets 100th Goal in Triple OT Men's Lacrosse Loss to Oswego

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 18th-ranked Ithaca College men's lacrosse team (5-2) suffered an 8-7 loss in triple overtime to visiting Oswego (6-0) on Sunday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.

Senior Tom Mongelli netted a pair of scores to hit the 100-goal threshold for his career.

The Bombers took a 6-3 lead at intermission and held the Lakers scoreless in the third for a 7-3 advantage, but Oswego got hot in the fourth tallying four and forcing overtime. Two scoreless overtime periods passed before the Lakers scored the game-winner in the third OT stint.

Sophomore Pat Slawta scored three to lead the Bombers, while Mongelli added two. Sophomore Jacob Long had a career- and game-high three assists.

Freshman Matt Greenblatt won a career- and game-high 10 faceoffs and scooped up a career- and game-best seven ground balls for the Bombers. Senior Chris Duncan picked up five ground balls and forced a contest-high four turnovers.

Senior Brendan Green made 12 saves in goal in 56:23, while freshman Mac Davis made one stop in 13:28. 

Senior Devin Weinshank opened all scoring on a Long assist just 2:35 into action. Oswego answered with a pair of scores to lead 2-1 at 3:21, but Long found Slawta for a game-tying goal at 2:26.

Ithaca would add to Slawta's score for four straight goals and six of the game's seven scores from the end of the first to the start of the fourth.

A score from junior Connor Lowe made it a 3-2 Ithaca game, before Slawta scores on assists from sophomores Andrew Kristy and Ryan Burns powered the Bombers to a 5-2 lead at the 10-minute mark of the second. The Lakers scored a minute later, but a pair of Mongelli goals followed for a 7-3 Ithaca advantage at the end of the third. Mongelli's tallies came on assists from senior Billy LaPerch and Long.

Oswego managed four unanswered goals over a seven-minute span in the fourth to force the game to overtime. Following two scoreless periods, the Lakers finalized all scoring 8-7 with a golden goal at 2:09 of the third.

Ithaca narrowly outshot Oswego, 40-39, held a 41-27 gap in groundballs and won 13 of 20 faceoffs.

The Bombers will next travel to Union for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday, March 28.
