Ithaca Men's Soccer Claims Empire 8 Co-Championship In 0-0 Tie With No. 7 Stevens

Box Score

UTICA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca men's soccer team tied 0-0 in the championship game of the Empire 8 tournament Sunday against top-seeded and No. 7 nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology. The Ducks prevailed 3-2 in penalty kicks and earned the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships. The Bombers snapped Stevens' 14-game winning streak in the process. Ithaca finished its season with a 7-5-6 record and Stevens improved to 16-2-1.

Ithaca's best scoring chance came in the 95th minute on a direct kick from 25 yards out. Tim Goldman curled a low shot around the wall that forced a diving save at the right post by Stevens goalkeeper Paul Killian. The ball was loose after the initial shot and Blair Carney pursued the rebound, but Killian was able to deflect the rebound shot past the post.

Kenny Chapman made nine saves in the game. He had five individual shutouts on the year and was also part of two other shutouts. He had shutouts in both games of the Empire 8 tournament and was named to the all-tournament team. A.J. Wolfanger and Tim Goldman were Ithaca's other representatives on the all-tournament team.

Two Stevens shots were denied by the goal frame, one in the first half and one in the second. Stevens had a 17-9 advantage in shots and an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.

It was Ithaca's first appearance in the Empire 8 title game since the 2008 season, and the team's first conference title since 2002.
