Defense Leads Ithaca Women's Basketball To 20-Point Win At Cortland

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Ithaca women's basketball team remained undefeated on the season after a stellar defensive effort led the Bombers to a 53-33 win at Cortland on Tuesday night at Corey Gymnasium. Ithaca had 20 steals and three blocked shots in the victory, and the Bombers never trailed.

Ithaca took advantage of 18 Cortland turnovers in the first half and held the Red Dragons to just 17 first-half points, the lowest-scoring half of the year for Cortland. Mary Kate Tierney, Kathryn Campbell and Jenn Escobido had five steals each to lead the defensive effort.

The Bombers shot just 30.6 percent from the field, but accumulated nearly twice as many field-goal attempts as Cortland largely due to the disparities in turnovers and offensive rebounds. Ithaca had 17 offensive boards to gain second-chance opportunities while Cortland managed just four offensive rebounds.

Campbell had 10 first-half points and finished with a game-high 15 points. Escobido had 11 points and six rebounds to go with her five steals. Tierney also had six rebounds.

Ithaca returns to action Friday at 6 p.m. at St. Lawrence. The Bombers' first home game of the season is Dec. 4 against Elmira, which also marks the start of Empire 8 play.
