Rochester, N.Y. – The 26th-ranked Ithaca men's lacrosse team (5-4, 1-1 Empire 8) succumbed to #4 Rochester Institute of Technology (9-0, 3-0 Empire 8), 11-9, in conference action on Saturday afternoon.
After the Bombers took an early 2-0 advantage, the Tigers scored four consecutive to lead 5-4 at intermission. Junior
Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) scored two of his game- and career-high five goals to knot the game at 7-7 but RIT tallied four of the game's final six goals to remain undefeated on the season.
Mongelli was joined by freshman
Jake Long (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) with two goals, and junior
Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) and sophomore
Andrew Bruce (De La Salle/Lafayette, Calif.) with one each.
Long also dished out a team-best two assist for the Bombers.
Mongelli, junior
Chris Duncan (Regis Jesuit/Denver, Colo.) and sophomore
Adam Wacenske (Gates-Chili/Rochester) each picked up four ground balls, while junior
Brian DiBetta (John Jay/Katonah) won 14 of 22 faceoffs for Ithaca.
Bruce opened all scoring on a
Long assist at 10:34 before
Mongelli went unassisted in making it a 2-0 Bombers lead. RIT broke its scoring silence at the one-minute mark of the first period, but a
Mongelli goal to open the second reinstated Ithaca's two-goal advantage.
The Tigers rattled off four consecutive scores to take a 5-3 gap at 7:49 in the second.
Long answered at 7:10 with his first goal of the game to bring the game to 5-4, a score that stood through into intermission.
Weinshank broke up a pair of RIT goals to open the second half before
Mongelli netted two straight to bring the game to a 7-7 stalemate. The Tigers mirrored
Mongelli's efforts as they scored back-to-back goals for a 9-7 advantage.
Long brought the game to 9-8, scoring with just 26 seconds lingering in the third period.
RIT notched a pair of goals early in the final period for a three-goal lead.
Mongelli then used a
Wacenske feed to bring the game to 11-9 at 4:32, but it was not enough as the Tigers held off the Bombers' battle for the win.
RIT narrowly outshot Ithaca, 40-36 and scooped up 33 ground balls to the Bombers' 29, while Ithaca won 14 of 23 faceoffs during the game.
The Bombers will next travel to Utica on Wednesday, April 13 for a 4 p.m. contest.
