Whittier, Calif. – The Ithaca (1-3) men's lacrosse team broke open a close game with five unanswered goals in the third quarter in an 11-3 win over Whittier (3-3) Monday evening in California. The Bombers posted their highest scoring total of the season and also held its opponent to its lowest total of the season.
Sophomore attackman Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) scored a career-high five goals in the game and now has eight goals in his last two games, and a team-leading nine goals on the season. Weinshank scored twice for Ithaca in the first quarter as the Bombers built a 3-1 lead. He added three more in the third quarter as Ithaca stretched its advantage from 4-2 at halftime to a commanding 9-2 advantage.
All of Ithaca's goals came in even-man situations and 10 of the 11 goals were assisted. Senior attackman Mike Lohan (Calhoun/Merrick) had a career-best four assists in the game and scored his first goal of the year. They were his first five points of the season and established career-highs in points and assists in a game. Junior midfielder Jay Lucas (Fox Lane/Bedford Hills) added two assists.
Junior midfielder Mike Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) and sophomore attackman Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) added two goals each. Sophomore midfielder Brian DiBetta (John Jay/Katonah) scored Ithaca's other goal. Silipo and DiBetta tied for Ithaca's team lead in the game with two caused turnovers each.
The Bombers picked up 32 ground balls in the game. Senior midfielder Nick Neuman (Madison West/Madison, Wis.) led the team with eight and sophomore defender Will Kraus (Salisbury School/Skaneateles) had six. Junior goalkeeper David Gal (Loomis Chaffee/Amherst, Mass.) made 11 saves.
The Bombers return to action Wednesday versus Farleigh Dickinson in a neutral site game in California.
