Williamsport, Pa. – The top-seeded wrestling team (16-0), ranked fourth nationally, placed first at Lycoming's Budd Whitehill National Duals, beating seventh-ranked New Jersey (the second seed) 25-11 in the title match. The Bombers have won 19 straight dual matches – two short of the school record, set a school record with their 16th victory of the season, and won the Whitehill Duals title for the second time in six years.
Ithaca opened competition with a 30-12 win over Hunter Friday morning, then defeated York (Pa.) 36-12 in a second-round match. The Bombers trounced #30 Trine, the eighth seed, 34-4 in the quarterfinals and beat #16 Wilkes (seeded fourth) by a 29-9 count in the semifinal round.
Two nationally ranked Bombers both posted 5-0 records on the weekend. Junior Blaine Woszczak (Wall/Manasquan, N.J.), the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, recorded two pins and a technical fall. Woszczak is now 26-2 on the season (with an 14-0 mark in dual meets) with four falls and a team-leading six technical falls. His career record stands at 89-27.
At 174 pounds, junior David Priest (Wyomissing/Douglassville, Pa.), who's ranked sixth nationally, also posted five wins (three by decision, one by major decision, one by fall). Priest raised his season record to 17-3 – with a 9-1 mark in dual meets – and is now 70-22 as a Bomber.
Wrestling at 141 pounds, sophomore Jeremy Stierly (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown, Pa.) won all four of his bouts. Stierly, who's ranked sixth nationally, is 20-2 on the season (11-1 in dual-meet competition) and 43-12 as a Bomber.
At 125 pounds, fifth-ranked senior Jon Gregory (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, N.J.) remained unbeaten with a forfeit win Friday and a pair of major decisions Saturday. Gregory is 18-0 this winter and 73-29 in his career.
Wrestling at 125 pounds, fourth-ranked senior Chad Winowich (Abington Heights/Clarks Summit, Pa.) won three times to up his season mark to 19-3 (7-0 in dual meets) and his career record to 86-35.
Senior Willie Horwath (Liberty/Bethlehem, Pa.) stretched his dual-match winning streak to 25 by winning his first four bouts (he lost 4-2 to the nation's seventh-ranked wrestler) and raised his career record to 111-39. He moved into seventh place on Ithaca's all-time victory list and is 20-5 this winter.
Senior heavyweight Joe Goetz (New Hyde Park Memorial/New Hyde Park), who's ranked ninth nationally, won all three of his matches including a pin against his first opponent. He's 5-1 this season and 51-31 in his career.
Senior David Sbriscia (Warren Hills/Stewartsville, N.J.) went 3-1 at 197 pounds, picking up his second pin of the season. He's 8-1 this season and 61-32 in his career.
Sophomore Seth Ecker (Pottstown/Pottstown, Pa.) raised his season record to 15-5 (9-0 in dual matches) and his career slate to 39-13 by winning both his bouts at 133 pounds.
Sophomore Derek Brenon (Immaculate Heart Central/Watertown) posted a 2-1 mark at 157 pounds. Brenon, who's 15-5 this year, recorded his fifth fall. Classmate Matt Mahon (Brighton/Rochester) split a pair of bouts at heavyweight, recording his team-leading 10th pin. He's 17-5 this winter and 36-13 with 19 career pins overall.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, senior John Dale (North Penn/Lansdale, Pa.) won by major decision. He's 12-8 this year and 46-35 in his career. Sophomore Tom Heckman (Cedar Cliff/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) won his only bout at 197 pounds. He is now 14-9 on the season.
