Cortland, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's soccer team (2-1-2) scored a goal in each half and went on to a 2-1 win at Cortland (1-3-1) Tuesday in a non-conference game at the Cortland Stadium Complex. Junior midfielder Matt Baluzy (Roosevelt/Salt Point) scored his first goal of the season and it proved to be the game-winner in the 53rd minute.
Baluzy's goal came on a 35-yard shot on a sharp angle from the right side of the field, and beat the Cortland keeper in the upper left corner of the net. He has two goals in his Ithaca career, and both of them are game-winning goals.
Ithaca took the lead in the ninth minute of the game when freshman midfielder Jack Shirley (Hand/Madison, Conn.) headed in his first career goal off the right post. The ball spun across the goal line to put the Bombers in front. Senior midfielder Gerard Lewis (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) delivered a cross from the left side and earned an assist on the goal.
Senior back Michael Jordhamo (Arlington/Hopewell Junction) directed a header off the crossbar in the 73rd minute that would have given the Bombers a two-goal advantage. Ithaca held on in the closing minutes to earn its second win of the year.
Junior goalkeeper Justin Parlapiano (Stafford/Stafford Springs, Conn.) made two saves in the win, improving his record to 2-1-2 on the year.
The Bombers return to action Saturday at Rensselaer at 3 p.m.
