Fast Start Keys Win for No. 6 Men's Lacrosse Team

Alec Siefert leads Ithaca with 16 goals and 19 points.

Whittier, Calif. - The No. 6 Ithaca mens lacrosse team (4-0) built a 6-0 lead at halftime and went on to a 15-9 victory over Whittier (3-3) on Tuesday during the team's spring trip in southern California. Sophomore goalie David Gal (Loomis Chaffee [Conn.]/Amherst, Mass.) made 13 saves, including stopping all five shots on goal in the first half. Senior attackman Alec Siefert (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) led the offense with four goals and an assist.

The Bombers got goals from four different players in building a 4-0 first quarter lead. Freshman midfielder Nick Munn (Canandaigua Academy/Canandaigua) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first minute of play. Senior midfielder Matt Cutter (Needham/Needham, Mass.), junior midfielder Nic Heckman (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.), and freshman attack Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) added goals in the first 15 minutes. Siefert and Cutter scored in the second period.

Ithaca converted an extra-man opportunity in the third quarter, just one of two EMOs in the game for the Bombers, as senior midfielder Kevin Bush (Arapahoe [Colo.]/St. George Island, Fla.) deposited a pass from Heckman.

Whittier pulled to within 8-6 at the end of the third quarter, but the Bombers scored seven times in the final quarter to seal the victory. Three of Siefert's goals came in the final 15 minutes.

Ithaca returns to action Thursday in San Diego, Calif. with an afternoon contest against Drew.
