ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's soccer team (10-3-0), ranked eighth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 14th by D3soccer.com, lost 2-1 to visiting St. Lawrence (7-6-3) Saturday. The loss snapped a four-match unbeaten streak the Bombers had enjoyed over the Saints.
St. Lawrence scored the game's first two goals, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute. The Bombers, who owned a 29-12 advantage in shots for the game, outshot the Saints 21-6 after that point, scoring in the 64th minute on a goal by graduate student Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center).
Koppel's goal was her 10th of the season; she headed in a corner kick taken by senior Emily Mogk (Bozeman/Bozeman, Mont.). Mogk's assist was her team-high sixth.
Ithaca had five chances at the tying goal, including a header with 17 seconds left by senior Amy Scheffer (Schalmont/Schenectady) that went wide.
Koppel and Scheffer have both scored a team-leading 25 points this fall; nine of the program's 21 25-point seasons have come in the past three years.
Juniors Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.) and Jessica Platt (Mounument Mountain/New Marlborough, Mass.) both played a half in goal; Sotomayor made five first-half saves and Platt held St. Lawrence scoreless in the second period.
Ithaca wraps up Empire 8 regular-season play Wednesday, hosting Utica at 4 p.m. The Bombers have already clinched the league's regular-season title and the top seed for next month's conference playoff tournament.
