Men’s Soccer Kicks Off Empire 8 Play with Win at Utica

Matt Radley scored his first goal of the season.
Utica, N.Y. — The Ithaca men's soccer team (6-1-0, 1-0-0) won its Empire 8 opener 2-0 win over Utica (3-3-1, 0-1-0) Saturday. The Bombers now have a three-game winning streak, matching their longest streak of the season.

Junior forward Jeff South (Aptos/Aptos, Calif.) opened the scoring with a goal in the sixth minute. South is now tied for the team lead with three goals. Junior back Justin Wu (Philips Academy/Concord, Mass.) recorded his first career point with an assist on the goal.

Sophomore midfielder Jeff Geyer (Rham/Hebron, Conn.) assisted on the second goal in the 73rd minute. Geyer's pass was headed into the net by senior back Matt Radley (Byron Bergen/Bergen) for his first goal of the season.

Ithaca's defense limited the Pioneers to four shots in the game, and the Bombers outshot Utica 6-1 in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Andy Wilhelm (Centennial/Ellicott City, Md.) saved three shots for his second consecutive shutout.

The Bombers will be home for two Empire 8 games next weekend. Ithaca hosts Nazareth at 1 p.m. Saturday and Rochester Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. Sunday.
