ITHACA, N.Y.-- The #20 Ithaca College softball team (11-5, 2-0 Empire 8) swept conference rival St. John Fisher (4-12, 2-2 Empire 8) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 8-2 and the second 3-1. With the wins today, Ithaca broke the all-sports Empire 8 record for consecutive conference wins. Ithaca is currently riding a 27-game conference win streak.
Both starters for the Bombers, senior
Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) and senior
Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Victoria, British Columbia), pitched complete games for the Bombers.
In the opener, junior outfielder
Chelsey Feldman (Hewlett/Lynbrook) had three hits and scored two runs, helping the Bombers defeat the Cardinals.
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Bombers exploded in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on four hits. Senior
Amanda Kowalsick (Riverhead/Jamesport) put Ithaca on the board with her two RBI double that scored sophomore
Alyssa Guzman (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh) and
Feldman. Freshman
Kait Dolan (Victor/Farmington) earned a walk and came around to score the third run on a groundout by senior shortstop
Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain).
Kowalsick would score the fourth run of the inning off of a fielder’s choice by Cade. Senior catcher
Stacy Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston) got in on the action with a single. Sophomore
Caitlin Ryan (Allentown, Clarksburg, N.J.) continued the inning with a RBI single that scored
Cade.
Pelesz stole home to score the final run of the inning for the Bombers.
The Bombers added another run in the fourth on a RBI double by Dolan that scored Feldman.
The final run for the Bombers came in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Feldman. The hit by Feldman scored Ryan, who earned a walk to get on base.
Cade pitched the complete game giving up just two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
The Bombers wasted no time scoring in the second game, getting one run in the first on a Cutspec RBI single that scored Dolan.
Ithaca scored two more runs in the fifth inning off a two RBI single by sophomore Regina Douglas (James Caldwell/West Caldwell, N.J.). The single scored Kowalsick and Dolan who both singled to get on base earlier in that inning.
Myers pitched the complete second game, giving up 11 hits but allowing just one earned run, while striking out eight batters.
The Bombers head to Alfred Sunday for more Empire 8 competition in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
