Women's Swimming and Diving Beats Alfred, Nazareth

Rhoades was a part of a record-setting relay and won two individual events.

Alfred, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's swimming and diving team defeated Alfred 193-49 and Nazareth 129-114 in a season-opening tri-meet Saturday at Alfred. Ithaca's 200 medley relay team of Amanda Vitullo (Schalmont/Schenectady), Becca Blazak (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, Pa.), Cali DeSanto (Mexico/Mexico) and Sheila Rhoades (Dryden/Dryden) set a new pool record by starting off the meet with a winning time of 1:53.98.

Rhoades, a sophomore, also won the 50 free (25.03 seconds) and 100 free (54.88 seconds) to earn key team points for the Bombers. Blazak, a sophomore, finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:22.61) and was first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.55. DeSanto, a freshman, was second in the 100 butterfly.

The Bombers swept first and second in the 200 free as sophomore Maddie Kennedy (Head Royce/Alameda, Calif.) touched out freshman Missy Keesler (Union-Endicott/Endicott) by two-tenths of a second, winning the race with a time of 2:04.17. Keesler went on to win the 100 backstroke (1:02.53).

Freshman Kelly Murphy (Blake/Silver Spring, Md.) finished second in both the 1,000 free and 500 free. Sophomore Megan Stover (Pennridge/Perkasie, Pa.) was second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

Ithaca will host its first home meet of the season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Rensselaer.
