ITHACA, N.Y. – The #13 Ithaca women's soccer team (11-1-2, 7-0-0 Empire 8) defeated Nazareth (9-6-1, 5-1-0 Empire 8) 2-1 in double overtime Saturday at a rain-soaked Carp Wood Field to extend the Bombers' Empire 8 unbeaten streak to 37 games and clinch the Empire 8 regular-season title and the right to host next month's Empire 8 Championship Tournament. The Bombers will host the top four teams Nov. 8-9, with two semfinals Saturday and the league final Sunday.
Junior forward Winnie Adrien (Blairstown Academy/Blair, N.J.) opened the scoring for the Bombers in the 31st minute. The unassisted goal was her 12th of the season which is tied for the best on the team, and her 28 points ranks first.
Ithaca outshot Nazareth 17-3 in regulation, but was unable to score a second goal after surrendering one to Nazareth. The Bombers recorded six shots in the two overtime periods before junior forward Amy Scheffer (Schalmont/Schenectady) scored the game winner with less than 2:30 remaining on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. The goal was her 10th of the season.
Sophomore goalie Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.) played the entire game in net for the Bombers and earned her 10th win of the season.
Ithaca will play its final Empire 8 contest of the season on Wednesday at Utica.
