Utica, N.Y. -- The Bombers clinched their fourth straight Empire 8 championship with a 6-2 win over the host Pioneers in the opener of a doubleheader. The second game was halted in the seventh inning because of darkness with the score tied 11-11. No announcement was made about a possible make-up date.

Freshman Nick Sottung (Pulaski/Pulaski) led the Bombers to their eighth straight win, improving to 5-0 (the best start by an Ithaca freshman since Dave Axenfeld went 7-0 for the 1980 national championship team). Sottung struck out 11 and allowed seven hits.

Junior shortstop Rob Litz (Walkill/Walkill) doubled twice for two of thaca’s four hits. Senior second baseman Marty O’Boyle (Verona/Verona, N.J.) singled, scored a run and stole two bases.
