ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the third time this season, the Ithaca College wrestling team dropped a dual match on tiebreak criteria, falling 19-18 to Delaware Valley College on Saturday afternoon at Ben Light Gymnasium. The Bombers held an 18-9 advantage, but the Aggies won the last three bouts by decision to tie the score at 18-18. The tiebreaker criteria was based on most six-point victories, and that went to Delaware Valley with a pin in the 125-pound weight class.
Friday night at Cortland, Delaware Valley lost a dual on tiebreaker criteria. They are now 8-5 on the season. 12th-ranked Ithaca fell to 8-4, with three losses on tiebreak.
Delaware Valley won by pin at 125 as Zac Haynes got an early takedown and first-period pin in 2:16.
The Bombers regained a lead in the dual with back-to-back wins by major decision. The nation's top-ranked 133-pounder,
Alex Gomez, won 17-5 and
Nick Wahba scored a 14-2 major at 141. Ithaca extended its lead to 11-6 with a win by decision at 149 from
Eamonn Gaffney.
Del Val got back on the board with a 6-1 decision win at 157 by Emmanuel Ajagbe, a returning all-American for the Aggies.
The Bombers earned their third major decision of the dual with a convinving 9-0 win by
Kristopher Schimek at 165. Schimek, ranked second in his weight class by the NWCA, achieved the major margin with near-fall points in the third period.
The two closest bouts of the afternoon came next. At 174 pounds, Ithaca's
Carlos Toribio won by 6-4 decision. Toribio built a 4-2 lead in the third period, then Ben Schweiger of Delaware Valley scored a reversal to tie the score 4-4. Toribio had the riding-time advantage secured, so Schweiger allowed an escape and yielded the 5-4 advantage in attempt for a takedown in the final 20 seconds that never materialized.
At 184, Delaware Valley's Connor Gabriel had a 5-2 advantage in the third period before Ithaca's
Liam Korbul scored a takedown with one minute remaining and nearly scored near-fall points by taking his opponent to his back, but they were not awarded. Korbul yielded an escape to get to neutral position, and then received a point for Del Val stalling. Gabriel managed to tie up the position for the remainder of the period and earned a 6-5 decision win.
The Bombers led by six points headed to the final two weight classes. Nationally-ranked Aaron Karns of Delaware Valley led 7-2 in the third period, but a takedown for
Zach Conner and near-fall points got the match tied. A late reversal from Karns plus riding time resulted in a 10-7 decision victory, setting up the decisive bout at heavyweight.
The heavyweight bout pitted Ithaca's
Shane Bartrum with a 20-7 overall record against Zach Roseberry of Delaware Valley, who defeated Cortland's nationally-ranked heavyweight in a dual on Friday night and carried a 17-5 individual record into the bout. Roseberry got a first-period takedown and Bartrum escaped for a 2-1 score. Bartrum started down in the second period and escaped to tie the bout 2-2. Roseberry opted to begin the third period in the down position, and Bartrum allowed the free escape to start neutral and give Roseberry the 3-2 lead. Neither wrestler scored the rest of the way and the dual was decided on tiebreak criteria.
