ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second time this season, the Ithaca College wrestling team found itself in a tie score following the completion of a dual-match against a nationally-ranked team, but lost on tiebreaker criteria. Saturday at Glazer Arena at the Athletics & Events Center, 13th-ranked Ithaca fell to fifth-ranked Wabash 23-22. The dual was tied 22-22, and the final result was determined by the third tiebreaker criteria, total points scored in matches determined by technical falls, major decisions and decisions. Wabash held a 36-32 advantage in those six bouts.
Wabash improved its record to 11-3 on the season and Ithaca fell to 7-3. Earlier Saturday afternoon, Wabash was defeated 27-14 by 10th-ranked Cortland at Glazer Arena.
The visiting Little Giants started with a win by pin at 125 before Ithaca tied the dual with a forfeit victory at 133 pounds.
Alex Gomez moved up from 133 to wrestle at 141 pounds and earned a 14-4 major decision. Gomez, ranked second at 133 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, improved to 17-2 on the season. Wabash won the next two bouts to take a 15-10 lead in the team score.
Ithaca responded with two straight victories.
Kristopher Schimek, ranked third at 165, scored an 8-4 decision over Josh Sampson, who is ranked eighth.
Carlos Toribio scored an early takedown then won by injury default over fifth-ranked Conner Lefever. Those wins gave Ithaca a 19-15 lead. Wabash won the next two bouts, one by major decision and one by decision, to lead 22-19, but heavyweight
Shane Bartrum scored a decision victory in the second sudden-victory period by a 4-2 final. That knotted the score 22-22 and sent the dual to the tiebreaker criteria.
Ithaca returns to action Friday, when the Bombers host Nassau Community College in a 7 p.m. dual at Ben Light Gymnasium. The Bombers will then host Delaware Valley at noon Saturday at Ben Light Gymnasium.
