ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball (3-5) team blanked Baptist Bible (3-5), 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-10) before falling to Union (6-2), 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-20), Saturday on day two of the Bomber Invitational. Sophomore Carly Garone was Ithaca's representative on the all-tournament team.
Freshman Shaelynn Schmidt led all players with a match-high 14 kills against Baptist Bible. Sophomore Dylan Gawinski Stern posted 11 kills and junior Abbie Hutchinson added six kills on seven swings. Garone set for 20 assists and rookie Molly Brown dished out 11.
Gawinski Stern led the contest with five aces. Defensively, freshman Maggie Mutschler dug out 10 times.
The match opened in back-and-forth fashion, but the Bombers snapped a 7-7 stalemate on Gawinski Stern's serve for a 13-7 lead. Ithaca powered ahead, 18-10, but the Defenders answered to tie the set at 24. Baptist Bible twice denied Ithaca on set-point before Gawinski Stern put away a kill on a Garone set and senior Justine Duryea served up an ace for the two-point victory.
There were five ties to open the second set before Ithaca pieced together a 12-4 run and went on to claim a 25-18 victory. In the final game, Hutchinson and Syline Kim served Ithaca to an 11-2 lead as the Bombers ran away with the set, 25-10.
Against the Dutchwomen, Duryea posted nine kills and Gawinski Stern seven on Brown's match-high 24 assists. Garone had nine digs.
Union powered to a 25-13 victory, using a 12-3 run to close out the first set. Ithaca battled back from an 11-6 deficit in the second to knot action at 12. Seven additional ties ensued, but the Dutchwomen outlasted Ithaca for a 25-23 second-set win. Though Union secured the lead indefinitely in the final set with a 5-4 edge, Ithaca erased a six-point deficit to pull within 21-20. Union, the runner-up of the tournament, tallied four unanswered points to close the match in three.
Ithaca returns to the hardwood on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14 at the New Paltz Hawk Invitational.
