ITHACA, N.Y. -- Preliminary round matches in the championship and consolation brackets are complete through the first day of wrestling at the 2013 Ithaca Invitational. Ithaca advanced a total 12 wrestlers to the semifinal round of the championship brackets and will have at least one semifinalist in nine of 10 weight-class brackets. The Bombers stand second in team scoring after the opening day of action at Glazer Arena inside of the Athletics & Events Center.
At 125 pounds, Jimmy Kashian began his Ithaca College career with a win by pin in 5:22 in the first round and won his quarterfinal bout by a 5-2 score.
Anthony Cabrera won his first two tournament matches, capturing the first by first-period pin and the second by a 6-1 decision.
At 133 pounds, returning All-American
Alex Gomez started his 2013-14 season with a win by pin in 4:11 in the quarterfinals.
Nick Wahba joins Gomez in the semifinals after Wahba won by major decision 10-2 and then won a quarterfinal bout by a 7-1 score.
The 184-pound bracket also has two Ithaca wrestlers in the hunt for the weight-class title.
Dan Glinko won his first match by pin in 1:38 and his quarterfinal by 6-2 decision.
Liam Korbul won his first two collegiate matches, with a 9-2 decision in the opening round and an 8-1 decision in the quarterfinals.
Dominick Giacolone is another semifinalist for Ithaca after he won three bouts Friday in the 141-pound weight class. He won his first two bouts by major decision, scoring an 11-3 win and a 9-0 victory. He won his quarterfinal match 3-1.
Eamonn Gaffney earned bonus points in both of his bouts with a pin in 2:29 and a major decision 10-1 in the 149-pound group.
At 157, Ithaca's
Kevin Collins got a bye to the quarterfinals where he won 8-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Kristopher Schimek won three bouts at 165 to advance to the semis. Schimek won his first bout 7-0, his second by a 17-0 technical fall and his quarterfinal bout by pin in 7:00.
Carlos Toribio won two matches at 174 to move on to the semifinals. Toribio won his first match by pin in 1:57 and his second by a 4-3 decision.
Ithaca also has a semifinalist at 197 pounds, as freshman
Matt Booth won twice by pin to start his collegiate career. He pinned his first opponent in 4:10 and his second in 4:19.
Action resumes Saturday morning at Glazer Arena with consolation bracket matches starting at 10 a.m. and championship semifinal matches beginning at 11 a.m.
