Mari Rutz Mitchell was named the 13th head coach in Ithaca College women's tennis history in July 2024, after serving as an assistant during the 2023–24 season.
A former NCAA Division I ITA Academic All-American and standout player at Cornell University, Mitchell brings a deep understanding of high-level tennis, player development, and leadership to the Bombers program. She grew up competing nationally in USTA junior circuits and has been immersed in the sport from a young age.
In her first season at the helm of the Bombers, Mitchell led the team through a competitive Liberty League schedule, helping develop multiple All-League selections and supporting strong doubles pairings throughout the year.
Before joining the collegiate ranks, Mitchell served as the head coach at Ithaca High School, where she was named ESPN Ithaca Coach of the Year in 2020. She also previously served as an assistant coach at Cornell and has extensive experience mentoring junior players across age groups and ability levels.
Mitchell’s coaching style emphasizes individual development, mental toughness, and building confidence both on and off the court. In addition to her work at IC, Mitchell has supported junior tennis development at various levels through private coaching.
She is also a parent to three young adults and brings both personal and professional insight into her role in guiding student-athletes during a pivotal stage of life.
