On September 19, 1992, before a crowd of 4,417 fans, which included former players and NCAA executive director Dick Schultz, South Hill Field was renamed Jim Butterfield Stadium, in honor of the long-time professor and coach.
The track that surrounds the football field was installed in 1978. Other stadium updates included the press box, which was renovated in 1985 and again in 1998, and new bleachers, which were added in 1978. The latest improvement was the new scoreboard and message board installed in 2004.
Butterfield Stadium has seating capacity for approximately 5,000 spectators. The track & field program’s home site also includes a throwing area below Butterfield Stadium.
The track, resurfaced most recently in 1997, has played host to championships in the Independent College Athletic Conference, the Empire Athletic Association, the Empire 8, the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association, New York State Collegiate Track Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
