CORTLAND, N.Y.—Ithaca claimed the program’s first national championship by edging host Cortland 5-3 in penalty kicks after 120 minutes of scoreless soccer.
The Bombers (16-5-4), who were playing in the Final Four for the third consecutive season, converted all five of their penalty kicks in the shootout session, clinching the title when sophomore Cathy Moss, beat Cortland’s goalkeeper with a low shot.
Ithaca went first in the penalty kick session, taking the early advantage on a successful attempt by sophomore Lise Moore. Junior Beth Howland stopped the first penalty kick by Cortland (22-1-1) and the next six shooters were successful, including sophomore Michelle McKay, senior Tracy Coomber and sophomore Dana Marangi for the Bombers, setting the stage for Moss‘ decisive kick.
The game marked the first time that the NCAA title was decided in penalty kicks; previously, playoff games that were tied had been contested until a team scored.
Howland, who finished with seven saves, was named the Final Four’s Defensive Most Valuable Player. The rest of the Bomber defense that helped blank the Red Dragons (who owned a 12-5 advantage in shots) included junior Katie Kleinhans, sophomore Liz Neu, junior Kelly Wheeler and freshman Megan Collins, who joined Howland and Moss on the all-tournament team.
The Bombers had reached the championship game (their second in a row) with a 1-0 win over Methodist in the semifinals. In all Ithaca shut out its last seven opponents (including Plymouth State and Salem State in the NCAA regional playoffs), ending the season with a scoreless streak of 701:42.
