Ithaca College Athletics

2006: Byers returned from injury to earn first-team Empire 8 and ECAC honors. He was a third-team selection to D3football.com’s East Region all-star team. He led Ithaca’s linemen with 39 tackles (eight solo, 31 assisted), 10 tackles for loss, four passes break-ups and two sacks. He was named Ithaca’s Outstanding Lineman three straight times – after the Hartwick, St. John Fisher and Brockport games. His performance against Brockport (which included five tackles for loss) earned him a spot on D3football.com’s Team of the Week and recognition as Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week. He made a career-best 10 tackles in the win over #14 Springfield.

2005: Byers started the season opener at Buffalo State before a season-ending injury sidelined him.

 

2004: Byers played in every regular-season game as a freshman and started the season-opening win over Buffalo State. In that game he recorded four tackles, including one for loss, broke up a pass and recovered a fumble to set up an Ithaca touchdown. Byers collected a pair of solo tackles in Ithaca’s win over #20 Springfield.

High School: A 2004 graduate of Gates Chili High School, Byers was coached by Jason Benham. He was a second-team all-state selection and the Monroe County Player of the Year. Byers was also a two-time sectional wrestling champion; his coach was former Bomber all-American Jeff Wittman, a 1993 graduate and member of the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Personal: A chemistry major, he is the son of Richard and Kimberly Byers.
