Biography
2004-05: Herring recorded three top-five finishes at the Empire 8 Championships, swimming career-best times in all three events. Herring was eighth in the state and fourth in the conference in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:12.51) and was fifth in the Empire 8 in the 200- (1:49.08) and 500-yard (4:52.84) freestyle events. Herrring recorded a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle in Ithaca's win over Division-II Bloomsburg, and was a member of the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay squad in a dual meet against RPI. In Ithaca's win over Rochester, Herring recorded three third-place finishes.
2003-04: Herring swam season-best times in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles in 1:52.62 and 5:02.16, respectively, in a dual meet against Alfred. His second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle vs. Alfred was also a career-best time. Herring finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 10:23.19 in a meet against Hamilton and Hartwick. At the RIT Invitational he finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:25.11) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.40). Herring also finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle vs. Cortland (10:42.88). He was named to the Empire 8 Presidents’ List in the fall.
2002-03: Herring finished the season with 103.50 points. He placed eighth in the conference in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 15th at the state meet (17:34.47). Herring finished 12th in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles at the conference meet, with times of 1:49.83 and 5:03.12, respectively. He won his first collegiate race in the 1,000-yard freestyle against Cortland (10:48.65).
High School: Herring swam for coaches Mike Krein and Jason Paige at the YMCA. He also swam for coach Bruce Jaffe at Fairfield Prep during the 1998-99 season, and coach Kathy Walsh at New Canaan High School.
Personal: A television-radio major, he is the son of Peter and Pam Herring.
