2016-17: Velez posted an impressive performance during his junior season, recording an 29-7 overall record with a 9-0 record in dual meet bouts. Five of his 29 wins came by decision, while five came from fall and six from technical fall. Velez also recorded 13 wins by major decision.
2015-16: Velez had a fantastic sophomore campaign, posting a 37-8 overall record and a 15-3 mark in dual meet bouts on the year. He turned in place finishes at six invitational tournaments on the season. He was an All-New York State performer after coming in seventh at the NYS Collegiate Championships. He was named D3Wrestle.com National Wrestler of the Week after securing a weight-class championship at the Spartan Invitational. Velez went on to secure weight-class titles at both the ECWC Championships and the NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals. Velez earned his first NCAA All-American honors with a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Division III Championships. |
2015-16 Stats
2014-15: Only a freshman, Velez had a team high 33 wins, eight major decision wins, and finished second on the team in team points with 75 points in his first year as a Bomber. Velez was the runner up at the 165-pound weight class at the Ithaca Invitational, the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Championships, and the Division III Northeast Regionals. He also added an All-New York State performance with a fifth-place finish at the NYS Collegiate Championships. Velez went 11-2 in dual meets, and had three technical falls on the season. He earned ECWC Rookie of the Week honors during the first week of February. Velez was the only Ithaca freshman to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. |
2014-15 Stats
High School: A 2014 graduate of Westfield High School, Velez was coached by Glen Kurz. He earned four varsity letters and was a county and region champion. Velez also was a state qualifier and a placed at the wrestling state tournament.
Personal: A student in the exploratory program, he is the son of Rosa and Greg Velez.
