ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team duked it out with crosstown rival SUNY Cortland on Tuesday afternoon, with the contest ending in a 1-1 draw.
It took just four minutes for IC to get its first shot on goal as
Lilyana Baldi attempted to sneak one by the post, but Cortland's Olivia Rouse was able to get a hand on it and force a corner kick that her team cleared out easily.
The visitors' best scoring opportunity came in the 12th minute as they put up a shot following a corner kick. The attempt whistled high of the target but caused the IC defense to shape up.
The Bombers broke through in the 15th minute as a
Jayne Bogle corner kick found its way to
Zara Nourie for a header goal to put the squad up 1-0.
Cortland continued to search for the answering tally, seeing a strong opportunity with 3:35 remaining as they sent a shot on goal with keeper
Katrina Varnum out of position. Nourie stepped up and turned the shot aside to keep her squad ahead as time ran out on the half.
The pair continued to fight in the second half, with both teams struggling to make it through their respective defenses.
Cortland finally found the tying tally in the 75th minute as a falling Chloe Polito sent a ball up in a chaotic box, finding its way onto the head of Tyla Voutto for the score.
It appeared the Bombers were going to answer shortly after as
Sophie White found herself 1-on-1 with the keeper. White's shot went high.
The hustle continued on both sides of the ball as both teams looked for the goal to earn bragging rights.
Owning the last look of the game was Baldi, who went 1-on-1 with the goalie after finding her out of position, but it was too little, too late as time ran out, forcing a 1-1 draw.
It was a balanced contest, with each team recording five shots on goal and each netminder stopping four. They also saw seven corners apiece.
With the draw, IC moves to 4-1-2 on the year.
The Bombers will return to action on Saturday, September 26, as they host Vassar College in a 3 p.m. contest to open their Liberty League slate.
