ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team remained undefeated on the season Wednesday afternoon, battling the University of Scranton to a 0-0 draw at Carp Wood Field.
The Royals controlled much of the early possession and tested the Bombers' defense, but goalkeeper
Katrina Varnum kept Ithaca level with several key saves. Varnum stopped a one-on-one opportunity midway through the first half before making another strong save late in the opening 45 minutes.
Ithaca created chances of its own, including a
Zara Nourie cross that was punched away by the Scranton goalkeeper. The Bombers also put together several attacking sequences off set pieces, but neither team was able to break through before halftime.
Scranton continued to apply pressure early in the second half, but Varnum remained steady in goal, making several more saves to keep the Royals off the scoreboard.
The Bombers began to find more offensive momentum as the second half progressed.
Alyssa Andracki sent a shot just over the crossbar before Ithaca followed with a pair of chances from
Julia Gilgar and
Sophie White. Ithaca continued to pressure the Royals' defense, while Varnum came up with another save at the other end.
With under 10 minutes remaining, the Bombers defended several Scranton opportunities in front of their own net before pushing the ball back upfield. Lillyana Baldi eventually found
Sophie White with a cross for a one-timer, but the Scranton goalkeeper was there to make the save.
Neither team could find the deciding goal as the contest ended in a scoreless draw.
Varnum played lights out to secure her third shutout of the season, making an astounding nine saves.
The Bombers return to action Saturday, Sept. 19, when they host The College of New Jersey at 1 p.m. at Carp Wood Field.
