Justin Stangel Resigns as Men’s Rowing Head Coach

7/24/2026 9:55:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. – Ithaca College head coach of men's rowing, Justin Stangel, has announced his resignation after four seasons with the program, effective on July 24.

"Justin's leadership and dedication have continued to elevate Ithaca men's rowing, both within the Liberty League and on the national stage," said IC Athletic Director Aaron Bouyea. "We are grateful for everything he has contributed to our student-athletes and the program, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter."

In his four seasons on South Hill, Stangel guided the men's rowing program to three straight Liberty League titles (2024, 2025 and 2026) and three appearances at the IRA Championships.

"It has been an incredible honor to serve as the head coach of Ithaca College men's rowing," said Stangel. "I am deeply grateful to our student-athletes, assistant coaches, alumni, families, colleagues, and the athletic department for their unwavering support over the past four years."

Stangel secured three consecutive Liberty League Coach of the Year honors, and the first varsity 8 was named Crew of the Year each of the past three seasons.

"The greatest privilege of my time at Ithaca has been the opportunity to work with exceptional young men and women as they navigate a transformative time in their lives and to watch them grow as teammates, leaders, and people," Stangel added. "While I'm proud of what we accomplished competitively, I'm even more proud of the culture we continued to build together—one centered on hard work, accountability, and genuine care for one another."

He also mentored Bryce Williston to a pair of All-America seasons in 2025 and 2026, while Riley Maynard was an All-American in 2024 and Jake Lentz was the program's first All-American in 2023.

"I leave with immense gratitude for everyone who made this experience so meaningful and with complete confidence that the future of Ithaca College men's rowing is incredibly bright," Stangel concluded.
