Strong Second Quarter Leads Women’s Lacrosse Past No. 24 St. John Fisher, 15-11

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team secured a come-from-behind victory over nationally ranked No. 24 St. John Fisher University, 15-11, at Higgins Stadium on Friday afternoon. Ithaca, which trailed by four goals early in the second quarter, is now 10-4 on the season and ended Fisher's eight-game winning streak to drop the Cardinals to 10-4.

The Bombers scored just 11 seconds into the game off a pass from Aubrey Holowinski to Kelly Augeri to put the Bombers up 1-0 early in the game. However, St John Fisher quickly struck back with 13:16 left in the first quarter tying the game at 1-1. Fisher then netted back-to-back goals until Lily Cody netted a free position shot with 8:31 left in the quarter.

The Cardinals then went on a three-goal scoring run, which was ended again by Cody with 49 seconds left in the first quarter, to make the score 6-3.

Fisher scored first in the second quarter extending their lead to four goals at 7-3, but it was all Bombers from there, as IC went on a 6-0 run for the remainder of the period to take a 9-7 lead into halftime. Just over three minutes into quarter, Holowinski netted a goal of her own and Cody made yet another free-position shot bringing the Bombers back within two. With 8:56 remaining in the half, Cody found Kathryn Scallon who was able to capitalize on the pass. Scallon off an assist from Augeri, tied the game up at 7-7 a piece with 5:54 left in the half. Back-to-back goals from Scallon and Augeri put the Bombers up by two at intermission.

After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes of the second half, Holowinski off an assist from Leigh Naturale netted the 1th Bomber goal of the game. Naturale then scored a goal of her own off another assist by Cody. The Cardinals tried to strike back with 2:25 left in the quarter bringing the score to 11-8 Bombers at the end of the third.

The Cardinals struck first in the fourth quarter; however, Emma Hardy responded off an assist from Naturale. The Cardinals would not go down easy, netting their 10th goal of the game with 4:12 remaining keeping them within two. With 3:16 left in the game, Anna Dahlman scored off an assist from Cody as she slid one past the keeper.

With just under a minute left in the game, Cody extended the Bomber lead to three with another free position shot. As the Bombers went two-men down, Phoebe Hosford put her stick in the lane to cause a turnover with 38 seconds left who passed it to Holowinski in the midfield, who found Cody, who connected with Naturale to tally the final goal of the game.

Mikaela Dattilo had a show stopping game with 11 saves, Gabrielle Crellin held strong in the defensive end with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, Hosford had two ground balls and a caused turnover to go along in the defense. Sydney Smith had four ground balls in the midfield as Cody led the team with nine draw controls.

The Bombers are on the road for the remainder of the regular season as they travel to Hamilton on April 21 and Skidmore four days later. IC will host a Liberty League Tournament game on April 28.
