Men’s Rowing Close Out Competition at Knecht Cup Highlighted by Bronze Medal Finish

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Ithaca College men's rowing team closed out competition at the Knecht Cup on Sunday with a strong showing across finals, highlighted by a bronze medal finish and tightly contested racing against a deep field.

Finals day opened with the third varsity four competing in the Division III varsity event under shifting conditions, that had a challenging cross headwind. After a tough start, the crew settled into a composed base rhythm and steadily worked back into contention. Despite a late push to reel in second place, Ithaca secured a third-place finish to earn bronze.

The second varsity eight entered the day following a heat victory on Saturday. The crew got off the line cleanly but struggled to establish an efficient early rhythm, slipping to fifth. Regrouping through the middle of the race, the Bombers clawed back into fourth and began closing on the medals. In a tight finish, Ithaca came up just over two seconds short of third place to finish fourth overall.

In the final race of the day, the varsity eight competed in the B final of the open event against Division I and club competition. Ithaca started strong and quickly found speed, pushing their bow into the lead in the early stages. The race developed into a four-boat battle, with all crews separated by less than a deck for much of the course. Entering the sprint, the outcome remained wide open, but the Bombers ultimately finished fourth in a photo-tight race, with just 1.17 seconds separating first through fourth.

Head Coach Justin Stangel emphasized the value of the weekend's competition.

"It's a great opportunity for us to race against Division III, Division I and top club programs and really test our speed," said Stangel. "We saw some important changes from Saturday to Sunday that translated into better boat speed, which is exactly what we want at this point in the season. We're looking forward to getting back to work this week and continuing to build."

Ithaca returns to action on April 18 as they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts, for the Remley Cup, where they will face WPI, Colby, Trinity, and Marietta.
