ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team improved to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Liberty League with a close 15-14 victory at the University of Rochester on Wednesday afternoon.
The game began with a defensive possession for the Bombers coming up with an early solid start to ignite the team. After a back and forth two minutes Bombers
Kelly Augeri netted the first goal of the game on a free position. However, Rochester quickly responded with a 3-0 scoring run which ended with 8:34 left in the quarter as
Kathryn Scallon found the back of the net. The Bombers defense held strong for a few more minutes as Lilly Belsito scooped up two ground balls, allowing
Lily Cody to net the Bombers' third goal making it a two-goal game at the end of the first.
IC came out of the huddle hot as
Taya Dukes netted a goal as
Anna Dahlman scored tying the game up at 5-5. Rochester came back with two goals of their own putting them back in the lead 7-5. Back-to-back goals from
Lily Cody and another from Dukes gave the Bombers their second lead of the day with 8:14 left in the game. Scallon off an assist from
Leigh Naturale then tallied her 13th goal of the season. The halftime score sat at 9-8 in favor of the Bombers.
Out of the half, Rochester came out and immediately tied the game back up at 9-9. Scallon quickly replied to this with a goal of her own off assist from Naturale. Scallon once again netted the ball keeping the Bombers up by one at 11-10. Dukes scored the 12th goal for IC as the Yellowjackets once again tried to catch up. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bombers maintained a one goal lead of 12-11.
In the early minutes of the final quarter Naturale netted back-to-back goals of her own giving the Bombers a steady three-goal lead. However, this was not enough to put away the Yellowjackets for good as they went on a three-goal run throughout the middle of the final quarter. With 6:58 remaining, the game was tied 14-14. With 3:01 remaining, IC's
Sydney Smith buried the ball in the back of the net for the final goal of the game putting the Bombers up by one, and a defensive stop gave Ithaca a 15-14 win.
Ithaca returns home for its next six games beginning on Saturday against Union at 3 p.m.
