Softball Drops its Opening Game of THE Spring Games to No. 14 Simpson

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Ithaca College softball team opened its Spring Break trip on Sunday with two games against No. 14 Simpson College and the University of Southern Maine as part of THE Spring Games. The Bombers fell to No. 14 Simpson by a score of 10–0 in five innings before continuing play in the nightcap, but the game was halted and canceled due to weather in the fourth inning.

Simpson opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Mackenzie James grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home the game's first run before Katie Shaner followed with an RBI single and Addison Gookin added another run on a fielder's choice.
 
The Storm added three more runs in the second inning against first year pitcher Madison Collins. Megan Heidelbaur drove in two with a double to center field, and James capped the scoring with an RBI double down the left-field line giving them a 6-0 lead.
 
Collins settled in over the next few innings before running into trouble again in the fifth, when the Bombers surrendered four runs, three of which were unearned. Makayla Fowler accounted for two of the runs with an RBI single.
 
The Bombers were limited to two hits, one each from Kailen Winkelblech and Anna Bello. Collins managed two strikeouts in the pitching circle while giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Emma LaFave struck out four and improved to 4-0 overall for the Storm.
 
Ithaca falls to 2-1 on the season and returns to action on Monday with a game against Plymouth State University at 10 a.m. followed by Ramapo College at 2:45 p.m.
