Anthony Mestre was selected as National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Rookie of the Week on March 11. The national honor for Mestre follows his recognition as D3baseball.com Team of the Week and Liberty League Rookie of the Week, which were announced on Monday and Tuesday.
Mestre is just the second Bomber to received national player of the week honors from the NCBWA, joining Jake Binder, who was named pitcher of the week in 2019. The only other IC player to receive praise from the NCBWA was Shane Wolf in 2008 as the regional player of the year.
Mestre exploded offensively in his first collegiate week as he went 10-for-19 (.526) with 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, five stolen bases and three home runs. In a doubleheader split at Washington College, Mestre was 4-for-9, including a double, with five RBI, four runs and two stolen bases. He then smacked three home runs, including a grand slam, in a sweep of Arcadia as he batted 6-for-10 with nine RBI and six runs scored.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters, and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and official votes in the Dick Howser Player of the Year Award, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication and writing contests.
