MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team took on Montclair State down in New Jersey for a regional matchup on Saturday afternoon and came away with a tight, 11-10, victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Montclair opened up the scoring with three consecutive goals as Ithaca was trying to find its grounding. Ithaca continued to shoot to get on the board, and the ball finally found the back of the net with a goal from
Lily Cody with three minutes left in the quarter to make the game 3-1 Montclair.
Ithaca continued to hustle as
Kelly Augeri caused a turnover in the midfield to get it into Ithaca's attacking half. Defense stayed on lockdown as
Gabrielle Crellin hustled through ground balls and locked up defenders. Montclair found another goal, which was shortly answered by freshman
Anna Dahlman to cut the lead in half at 4-2 Montclair.
Crellin caused another turnover in the defense, picking up the momentum for the Bombers.
Emma Hardy continued to dominate on the draw, placing them for Cody to scoop up and run into their attacking half. Montclair scored their sixth goal, as Cody matched that to make it 6-3. The physicality made it a tight matchup and kept the intensity high. The Bombers went into halftime down by three goals, but kept their heads high heading into the second half.
Aubrey Holowinski opened the second half scoring with a man-up free position goal to give Ithaca an edge. Shots continued to ring posts and off goalies on both sides of the ball as the time ticked down. Cody capitalized on a free position goal to shorten Montclair's lead 6-5, followed by a draw control by
Aubrey Holowinski.
The Bombers began to dominate and take control, Cody put away another free position to tie the game 6-6 with seven minutes left in the third. With plenty of time left in the game, the Bombers had to conserve energy and focus on where to play their cards.
Crellin scooped up another ground ball, to push the pace where Augeri ripped a free-position shot top left corner to ignite the team's energy.
Kathryn Scallon scored with one minute left in the third to take the lead for the Bombers, 8-7, heading into the fourth.
Cody controlled another draw, drew a green card, to put the Bombers a man up heading into the last quarter of the game. Montclair matched that eighth goal early in the fourth quarter.
Phoebe Hosford scooped up a ground ball in the defensive end and continued to push the ball down the field into the offensive end safely. Augeri capitalized on another goal to put the Bombers back up 9-8 followed by a timeout.
Katrina Clarke snagged a caused turnover late in the fourth to keep the ball out of Montclair's possession.
Montclair was leading 10-9 with 1:50 left in the game and Cody scored to tie it, followed by another goal to take the lead with 30 seconds left.
Katelyn Ikle grabbed the final draw to seal the deal for the Bombers and ran the clock out to victory.
Mikaela Dattilo stopped saved seven shots in goal, while Crellin led the team with six ground balls. Hosford and Crellin also had two caused turnovers.
Augeri scored twice, while Cody netted six goals. Holowinski, Scallon, and Dahlman had one goal.
Emma Hardy placed the draws accurately for Cody to have seven draw controls and two draw controls for Holowinski.
Ithaca heads to Cortland for its next contest on February 28.
