ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca College men's rowing opened its fall racing season with an encouraging showing at the Head of the Genesee on October 10, bringing home silver in the Collegiate Eight and bronze in the Collegiate Four. Strong performances across the squad, including the racing debut of three novice athletes, gave the Bombers plenty to build on as the fall season continues.
The morning's racing saw the Varsity Eight split into two fours, with both crews putting together competitive performances to finish third and fourth. Ithaca's leading four secured the bronze medal in 18:16, followed closely by its teammates in 18:21. Behind Hobart's two leading entries, the Bombers finished just five seconds apart and comfortably ahead of the fifth-place crew, which finished in 18:55, demonstrating the closely matched strength of the two boats.
Ithaca's third four marked an important milestone for three novice rowers competing in their first-ever rowing race. The crew delivered a solid performance to finish 11th in 21:19, gaining valuable experience and completing an encouraging first competitive outing in the sport.
In the afternoon, the Varsity Eight delivered a strong performance to earn silver in the Collegiate Eight. The Bombers crossed the line in 16:38, finishing just 10 seconds behind Hobart A's winning time of 16:28 and establishing a clear margin over Hobart B, which took third in 17:04.
The Second Varsity Eight backed up that result with a strong performance of its own, placing fourth overall. In one of the tightest finishes of the day, the Bombers edged RIT by just three-tenths of a second to secure their position. The result capped a productive afternoon and highlighted the developing depth of the squad.
With two medals and promising performances throughout the team, the regatta provided a positive early checkpoint for the Bombers. The squad's focus remains on growth, strengthening technical fundamentals and raising standards with each week of training. The Genesee results offer both encouragement and motivation as Ithaca looks ahead to the remainder of the fall season and lays the groundwork for the spring.
The Bombers return to action on October 18 at the Head of the Charles, racing in the Men's Collegiate Eight, before the full squad rounds out the fall racing season at the Head of the Fish on October 24.
