SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team opened its 2025–26 season on Saturday at the Union Invitational, held across the Union Tennis Courts and Sportime Schenectady.
 
In the "B" singles bracket, junior Madeleine Sutro turned in a strong performance, going 2-0 on the day to earn a spot in Sunday's final. Sutro battled through a tight quarterfinal match against Patrycja Filonik of SUNY New Paltz, winning 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, [10-6]. She followed that with a semifinal victory over Elisa Iuri of St. Lawrence, 7-5, 6-0, [10-8]. Sutro will face another St. Lawrence opponent, Ariane Karera, in the flight championship on Sunday morning.
 
In the "A" singles flight, Alys Pop fell to St. Lawrence's Molly Jespersen in a close match, 0-6, 7-5, [7-10], while Sabrina Cheung was edged out by Union's Chara Meidani, 2-6, 4-6, in the quarterfinals.
 
Pop and Cheung bounced back in doubles play, teaming up for a solid 8-3 win over Union's Claire Langille and Sylar Semon. The duo will face SUNY New Paltz's Samantha Ostrander and Justine Stanejko in the next round.
 
In the "B" doubles bracket, Ava Casell-Lapetina and Martina Nicora advanced with an 8-2 victory over New Paltz's Alexandra Krol and Lula Vann-Brown in Saturday's opening round.
 
The Bombers return to action on Sunday for second day of the Union Invitational, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
