Ithaca Sculling Fares Well at the Green Mountain Head Regatta

9/29/2025 11:00:00 AM

Putney, Vt. - The Bombers enjoyed community and speed at the Green Mountain Head Race in Herrick's Cove, Vermont. Green Mountain is a fall favorite within the sculling community, attracting everyone from juniors to masters in the 75+ category, former world champions, and active elite scullers.  Open to 1xs and 2xs only, the event is a 5k stake race with a wide, 90 degree turn in each half of the race. Top crews are rewarded with syrup, cider and apples rather than the standard medals.

With Collegiate 1x offered as an event separate from the open events, the Bombers raced with their eyes on bringing home those sweet treats. Ithaca's Samantha Gallagher, Emma Thorne, Hope Oliveira and Claire Edwards fought hard and came through with syrup & apples for the ride home by placing 1st (24:51.8), 3rd (25:54.1), 4th (25:56.4), and 5th (26:28.7), respectively. Only one of the 6 entries from Middlebury snuck in at 25:18.4 to prevent an IC sweep of the top slots.

The open 2x did not include a separate collegiate event and left the entries from both Ithaca and Middlebury facing more seasoned scullers from Riverside Boat Club and the Green Racing Project. The Bomber doubles of Kai Lincke/Julia DiCostanzo, Kate March/Carys Owen, Calla Bobak/Anna Capodilupo, and Ava Connor/ Emmeline Robinson raced to 6th (22:44.8), 7th (24:01.5), 8th (25:00.1), and 9th (25:49.0) place and were the top collegiate finishes in the event.

Ithaca was well represented in Vermont even outside of our own entries. Alumnae Jenn Devlin, Chloe Lewis, and Karina Feitner all raced, as did a mystery masters man who shouted "Go Bombers - class of '84" while navigating up the return dock with his shell on his head. Recently graduated Men's team captain, Riley Maynard, was there - now on the other side of the megaphone as a coach, and we even met a non-rowing alumna of our Sports-psych masters program who was there as the parent of a junior rower.

Complete results from Sunday can be found here.

The Ithaca scullers have a solid training block leading into fall break this weekend, and will return to racing alongside our men's & women's Sweepers at the Head of the Genesee in Rochester on Saturday, October 11.
