IC Football Rolls at Hilbert, 65-3

HAMBURG, N.Y. - Coming off a 45-14 win over Alfred University, the Ithaca College football team continued its dominance, steamrolling past the Hilbert College Hawks, 65-3, in the Bombers' Liberty League opener at Frontier High School. Ithaca is now 2-1 on the season.

The Bombers used four quarterbacks, with Matthew Parker leading the way with 185 passing yards and a 92.9% completion rate (13-of-14). Nicholas Lang led the receiving corps with 87 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown, and one rushing touchdown. Four players rushed for at least 50 yards, including Tyrell Penalba, who ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries.

Parker set a new school record for completion percentage in a game, while the four quarterbacks (Michael Reed, Robbie Carcich and Trevor Wolfe), combined to establish a new school standard in completion percentage as they went 24-for-26 (92.3%) in the contest.

IC also racked up the fifth-most total offensive yards (566), tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game (6), tied for the second-most first downs (30) and allowed the fourth-fewest passing yards in a contest (13).

The Hawks' first possession set the tone. Ithaca's defense stopped Hilbert's running back for a 7-yard loss, then held the Hawks to one yard on the next two plays, forcing a three-and-out.

Coming off a 150-yard breakout performance, Tian Murray didn't show any signs of slowing down on the Bombers' first offensive play. Parker hit Murray with a quick pitch which Murray took for an easy 20-yard gain. A few plays later, Ithaca reached the 4-yard line and handed the ball to Lang on a jet sweep for a touchdown.

After Noah Workman punted for only 21 yards, the Bombers got great positioning only 33 yards from the end zone. The drive resulted in a Chase Myers 2-yard rush off of a speed option play.

After another three-and-out, the Bombers regained possession, and on the second play of the drive, Lang caught a 57-yard pass for the Bombers' third and final touchdown of the quarter.

The Bombers then scored 10 more unanswered points before letting up a field goal to go into the half with a comfortable 31-3 lead. This would be Hilbert's last point for the whole game.

Ithaca's passing game seemed to be the deciding factor at halftime as they had 185 passing yards and only 33 rushing yards. The Hawks had only 13 passing yards and 49 rushing yards.

At the start of the second half, the Bombers put in many backup players including quarterback Michael Reed as he threw for two of the Bombers three touchdowns in the third quarter. Ithaca went into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 51-3 lead.

With the game well in the Bombers control and Hilbert not even in reach, Ithaca didn't hesitate to extend the lead scoring two more unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win the game 65-3.

Reed was 8-for-9 passing for 103 yards and two touchdowns, while he rushed for 50 yards and another score. Carcich and Wolfe combined to go 3-for-3 for 32 yards and Carcich also scored a 19-yard rushing touchdown.

Myers racked up 67 yards on 14 carries and a score, while Ryan Turner had 50 yards on six attempts. Murray and Myers each had 43 yards receiving and Kevin Maloney caught his first career touchdown on a 26-yard reception.

Defensively, Ithaca logged 11 tackles for loss. Sam Tourangeau led the defense with eight tackles ,while Joe Spirra finished the game with six stops and Marven Simeus had five tackles. Henry Takacs forced a fumble and made four tackles.

The Bombers will look to extend their win streak to three games as they host Hobart College at 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at Butterfield Stadium.
