ITHACA, N.Y. – The chances of a four-peat as Liberty League champions came up short for the Ithaca College baseball team as the Bombers fell to RPI, 4-1, at Booth Field on Sunday. Ithaca finishes its season with a 26-15 record but has a shot to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which will be announced at 12 p.m. on Monday.
RPI put together the first scoring chance of the game by loading the bases with one out in the top of the third inning.
Danny Drotos got out the of jam with a strikeout and fielder's choice to keep the game scoreless.
The Bombers responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the third inning, but were unable to score as a double play ended the threat.
RPI rode the momentum swing into the top half of the fourth and Michael Lebenson led off with a solo home run to right-center on the first pitch he saw to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. RPI then loaded the bases on a pair of singles and hit by pitch, which led to a 2-0 lead on a fielder's choice.
Ithaca once again loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and finally cashed in as
Ryan Laubscher was hit by a pitch to bring home
Ethan Fantel to make it 2-1. The Bombers would strand three as a foul out ended the inning.
The difference moved back out to two runs, 3-1, in the top of the fifth as the Engineers pushed a run across on a fielder's choice.
RPI had a chance to break the game open in the seventh by loading the bases with one out, but
Dan Kellachan entered in relief and proceeded to strikeout the first batter he saw and then got out of the inning with a fielder's choice to keep the game at 3-1.
A sacrifice fly in the eighth brought in the final run of the contest for RPI.
