Cornell's 21 Strikeouts Propel Ithaca to Sweep of RPI

Troy, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team swept the RPI Engineers in a doubleheader on the road Monday afternoon. The Bombers won game one 8-0 in five innings and game two 7-1. Anna Cornell struck out 21 batters across both games, bringing her career total to 573 strikeouts, just four shy of breaking the record. The Bombers improved to 17-4 on the season and 5-1 within the Liberty League.

Game 1: Ithaca 8, RPI 0 (F-5 innings)
Through the first two innings, both pitchers dominated, with Anna Cornell striking out five batters. In the top of the third, the Bombers had their first scoring chance as Sela Scheinman and Cate Murray started the inning with singles. Scheinman stole a base, and both runners advanced on a fielding error during Murray's hit, but they were left stranded.

In the bottom of the third, Cornell struck out the side, bringing her total to eight strikeouts through three innings. The Bombers scored first in the top of the fourth when Jessie Lopez cleared the bases with a triple, driving in three runs.

The Bombers continued to add runs in the fourth inning. Scheinman drove in a run with a base hit, followed by an infield single from Elise Waddington. Haley Petrucci then drove in two more runs with a single. Anna Bello brought home Petrucci with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly, completing an eight-run inning.

Cornell faced some trouble in the bottom of the fourth but managed three more strikeouts to keep the score at 8-0. She finished the game with 13 strikeouts, securing the win.

Game 2: Ithaca 7, RPI 1
In the second game, Cornell continued her dominance, striking out eight batters through three innings. The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Jessie Lopez reached base on a fielding error, stole a base, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Murray's single.

In the top of the fifth, the Bombers loaded the bases with two walks from Belle de Oliveira and Scheinman, surrounding a Lopez base hit. Murray then doubled down the left field line, driving in two runs.

In the top of the seventh, Lopez led off with an infield single and scored on Scheinman's double. Murray drove in her fourth RBI of the day with a double to center field. Waddington walked, and Petrucci and Bello each singled, bringing home two more runs to make it 7-0.

The Engineers broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a single, scoring with runners on first and second. Mady Rowell then got a flyout to secure the Bombers' 7-1 victory.

Cornell had eight strikeouts and allowed only one hit in three innings. Rowell pitched four innings of relief, striking out two and surrendering one run. Cornell earned both wins on the afternoon to improve to 8-3 overall.
