CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 17 Ithaca College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 12 Cortland on September 11 at Stadium White. The loss drops the Bombers' record to 3-2.
The game was a battle in the midfield from the first whistle, but it was Cortland who found the boards early on. Only halfway through the first quarter, Red Dragon Keirra Ettere broke away for a 1-on-1 opportunity against Bomber goalkeeper
Maeve Clark. She buried one past the goal line to give Cortland a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the quarter continued to be a defensive battle, but neither squad found another scoring opportunity.
The Bombers' offense started strong in the second quarter with a penalty corner one minute into play. Although unsuccessful, the Bombers' defense held Cortland to no shots in the frame. Ithaca would earn one more penalty corner, but ultimately closed the half trailing by one.
The Red Dragons entered the second half hot. They registered four shots in 10 minutes before the Bombers could tally one of their own, but Clark shut down each opportunity to keep a tied score in reach. The Bombers ended the quarter with two consecutive shots, but failed to convert before the horn sounded.
Five minutes into the final frame, Cortland found time and room to extend their lead. On a rebound off of Clark, the Red Dragons put one more against the boards to make the score 2-0.
With a heightened sense of urgency, the Bombers' offense fought for an equalizing opportunity. It was not until the final 40 seconds of competition that sophomore striker
Brady Sullivan was able to fire one from the stroke line. Assisted by senior midfielder
Meara Bury, the goal cut the lead in half. However, it would not be enough to tie the score before regulation closed.
Both squads fired 12 shots throughout the competition and the Bombers earned six penalty corners compared to Cortland's three. Clark registered five saves on the Red Dragons' seven shots on goal.
The Bombers will next take on the No. 9 York College of Pennsylvania at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 back at Higgins Stadium.
