ITHACA, NY- The magical season for the nationally ranked No. 10 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team continued this Friday with a convincing Liberty League Semifinal win over the RPI Engineers, 14-7, at Higgins Stadium. This win advances the Bombers to the Liberty League Championship this coming Sunday on their home turf.
The first half of this contest saw RPI hang around with the Bombers as both defenses and goalies were locked in from the start.
Maizy Veitch and
Lily Cody got things going offensively netting the first two goals of the contest for the Bombers making it 2-0. Gabbie Valle and Ella Graff answered right back however making this a 2-2 contest heading into the second quarter.
The second half was somewhat of the same with both teams scoring and firing right back at the other.
Sydney Phillips got on the board for the Bombers making it 3-2, but then Quinn Wollard scored bringing it back to 3-3. Wollard would score again after a Veitch and Cody tally making this a 5-4 game heading into halftime.
After the break, Megan Shay tied the game for the Engineers, but Ithaca rattled off three consecutive goals right after thanks to Veitch and
Sydney Phillips. The Bombers led 8-5, but shortly after, Shay cut the deficit to two goals making it 8-6 on a free-position goal heading into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter saw the Bombers crack things open as they scored four goals in this one putting them up 12-6. RPI became careless with the ball and Ithaca made them pay.
Caroline Wise and Veith were the main contributors in the end as they helped seal the deal for the Bombers.
Wise finished the day with two goals and five assists while Veitch had five goals of her own to lead the Bombers offensively.
Lexi Held made 12 saves and was especially sharp early in this one.
The Bombers will now look to capture the Liberty League title this Sunday at home when they take on familiar foe, No. 7 William Smith College. The drama on the South Hill continues Sunday, May 5th at 1 pm.
