CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ithaca College baseball team suffered its first NCAA regional loss since 2019 as the Bombers fell to Lynchburg, 3-1, in the opening round at Case Western Reserve. Ithaca is now 31-10 on the season.
It was a three-up-three-down inning for
Colin Leyner to start the game as he struck out the lead-off hitter and then induced a pair of groundouts.
The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as
Collin Feeney reached on a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a base hit by
Louis Fabbo.
Camden Laney then drove home Feeney on an error to second base and Fabbo scooted over to third, but the Bombers could not bring in another run.
Leyner continued to roll through six innings as he allowed just one hit with three strikeouts to no walks. Lynchburg's Wesley Arrington was equally as impressive and blanked the Bombers for the remainder of the game.
The Hornets broke through with two runs in the top of the seventh with back-to-back doubles to tie the game and then took the lead on a bases loaded error.
Lynchburg tacked another run on the board in the top of the ninth to account for the 3-1 final.
Leyner struck out five and gave up five hits and three runs in one of his best starts of the season, but did not receive the offensive support to back his strong performance.
Ithaca will play Alvernia in an elimination game at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
