SARATONGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - At this weekend's New York State Collegiate Championships, Ithaca College women's rowing walked away with victories in six of the eight events that they entered.
Both the first and second varsity 8s started the day with decisive wins in their heats. Results from the heats predicted tight racing in the afternoon finals for both crews. The Bombers 1V lineup consisted of Caroline Haskins,
Taylor Volmrich,
Lily Babcock,
Laura Trainor,
Maggie Farber,
Erin Trojan,
Kai Lincke,
Samantha Gallagher and
Emma Hammel. Meanwhile the Second Varsity 8 was
Nicole De La Mota,
Emma Anderson,
Emmeline Robinson,
Anna Capodilupo,
Chloe Croft,
Zoe Paradis Stern,
Ashley Bailey,
Melanie Belmont and
Julia DiCostanzo.
Ithaca's entries in the novice Women's 8 (
Haley Beckford,
Juniper Gattone,
Joanna Morales,
Carys Owen,
Winifred Kanayo-Ezenwata,
Emily Murphy,
Emmi Chen,
Brandi Landis and
Payton Fisch) and the varsity women's double followed suit in their final-only events, crossing the line first, and earning the first gold medals of the day.
With rough winds predicted, the regatta organizers pushed afternoon racing 1 hour earlier, leaving less time for the varsity and 2v eights to refuel and recover between heats and finals. By afternoon, those winds had arrived in the form of direct headwind, and races were taking 60 to 90 seconds longer than they would be expected to take in flat conditions.
In the varsity 8 final, Ithaca lined up against D1 rivals from Marist and Colgate, eventually losing ground to the Marist crew, but charging back with a Sprint in the last 250 to nip Colgate at the finish. Their closest D3 competition came from Smith College, who finished 15 seconds behind the Bombers.
Medal spots in the 2v8 went to Hamilton, Smith, and Marist respectively. The Bombers finished fifth in the event, less than one second behind the Skidmore 1v8 who had been included in the race due to a miscommunication about the earlier schedule change.
At this point in the regatta, races were severely delayed due to the difficulty getting crews lined up on the stake boats at the starting line. The Bombers would not let this distraction stand between them and gold in the final four races of the day and battled through the wind with four top finishes in the Novice 4+, Varsity 2-, Varsity 4x and Varsity 1x. It should be noted that this was the third race of the day for every student-athlete in these varsity entries.
Many large regattas calculate team points trophies based on finishes across multiple events. While Army and Marist topped the men's and women's points respectively, the Bombers took home NY State's Sanford Cup for men's & women's overall combined points.
Ithaca College will return to action on Friday, May 3 for the Liberty League Championships that will take place on the same course in Saratoga Springs.
