No. 25 Women’s Lacrosse Squeaks by No. 23 Cortland, 11-10, in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Ithaca College women's lacrosse team won a hard-fought 11-10 overtime game over No. 23 Cortland at Grady Field on Wednesday afternoon, March 6. The Bombers are now 3-0 on the season.

Cortland struck first with goal by Amy Hoeffner within the first minute of the game. Ithaca was able to gain a free position attempt and ended up putting the ball away, with a goal by Maizy Veitch, making it a 1-1 game early on in play. The majority of the quarter was filled with turnovers, but Ithaca put a stop to the drought with a Chloe Nordyke goal assisted by Caroline Wise. After a missed shot by the Bombers, Cortland had a clear attempt that led into a Toni Cashman goal assisted by Nicole Lapoce with two seconds left in the quarter. The quarter ended tied at two apiece.
 
The second quarter opened with another Bombers goal after Ashley Melillo got a green card. Veitch was able to score her fifth goal on the season during an advantage opportunity that was assisted by Sydney Phillips. Cortland found themselves on the board in the second quarter at the ten-minute mark after a free position play. Toni Cashman was able to put one away making it tied at three. After an Ithaca turnover, the Red Dragons were able to capitalize with another Cashman goal putting them up 4-3 with nine to go in the half.
 
Cortland found themselves in a free position opportunity, as Lily Cody on Ithaca received a foul. The Red Dragons very own Emma Dempsey put one away (5-3), forcing a Bombers time-out with 8:03 to go in the half. After a Cortland foul, Cody was able to put a goal away with a free position shot, making the game 5-4 with 7:30 left. After a forced turnover caused by Cody, Lexi Kellish was able to tie the game off an assist from Veitch, making it 5-5 with 6:42 left in the half. The Bombers offense was on fire, as Nordyke solidified a free position goal with 6:07 to go, making it 6-5. After a clear attempt with 4:04 on the clock, Veitch found a way to complete her hat-trick in the first half with a goal 2:53 seconds to go. The half ended 7-6 in favor of Ithaca.



The second half opened with a scoring draught on both ends. Lexi Held in net for the goalies had five saves alone in just the third quarter. Cashman got past held finally and tallied in her fourth goal on the day, tying it up at seven apiece with 3:41 to go in the quarter. Ithaca was able to respond, with an advantage Kellish goal off a free position (8-7).

Ithaca opened the fourth quarter with a bang when Phillips scored off an assist from Maddie Hall. After some back-and-forth, Amy Hoeffner from the Red Dragons received a green card, and Hall was able to put one away on a advantage possession, assisted by Caroline Wise, Ithaca leads 10-7 with 12:04 to go. Cortland went on to score three more goals in a row and tied the game at 10-10 to end regulation, forcing the game to go to OT.

The game was a close back-and-forth for the first two minutes of overtime, but after a forced turnover by Cody, she was able to go coast-to-coast and finish at the net, ending the game 11-10 in favor of the Bombers.

The Bombers closed out a tight win in OT with Veitch leading the way with three goals, and two goals apiece from Kellish, Cody and Nordyke. Wise chopped in two assists on the night as well.

The Bombers head to Maryland next Wednesday to face-off against No.13 Trinity College (Conn.). Opening draw is slated for 12 p.m.
