ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Ithaca College softball team split a doubleheader against St John Fisher on Thursday as they were on the road. IC fought in a back and forth first game, losing in walk off fashion. However, the bats got hot in the second game as the Bombers won, placing their record at 11-5 overall on the season.
St. John Fisher 5, Ithaca 4 (F-8)
IC started off the scoring early in the second inning with Haley Petrucci smacking a solo home run over the center field wall.
The following inning, the Bombers capitalized on two errors with Elise Waddington driving in both runners after slapping a two-run single through the infield. The Cardinals answered back in the bottom half of the third with a single and a hit-by-pitch leading to a two RBI double. IC still held the lead at the end of the inning, up 3-2.
Sela Scheinman got things started in the 5th inning with a towering double while later scoring on wild pitch to boost the IC lead.
Anna Cornell kept the Cardinals offense in check throughout the game as she pitched the entirety of the game. Heading into the final inning, St John Fisher put together a late rally as the Cardinals tied the game with a two-run home run.
The Cardinals offense stayed hot as they walked the game off with a single in the 8th inning to cap off a 5-4 comeback victory.
Ithaca 9, St. John Fisher 5 (F)
The Bombers offense started off hot in game two with Sela Scheinman starting things off with a double and eventually scoring on a Jessie Lopez single. Lopez immediately took off and stole second which was followed by a two-run home run off the bat of Haley Petrucci. IC ended the first up 3-0.
The Cardinals put together a string of hits in the third inning, however pitcher Mady Rowell escaped the jam only giving up one run. Haley Petrucci continued her offensive display in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, driving in Jessie Lopez yet again. The Bombers took advantage of a Cardinals error to tally another two runs on the board to place their total at a 5-1 lead.
The score remained the same until the IC bats came alive in the seventh inning. Starting off with Jessie Lopez and Kailen Winkelblech scoring on a wild pitch and passed ball, respectively. The rally continued with Hudson Hassler smacking an RBI double down the line followed by a Sydney Miranda RBI single.
After 6 strong innings from Mady Rowell, the Bombers turned to Taylor Brunn on the mound with the bases loaded behind her in the final half inning of the game. The Cardinals put together a late game rally scoring four in the bottom of the seventh to cut the score the 9-5. With the bases loaded, the Bombers ended the game with Hunter Petrucci showing off on the defensive end with an impressive back pick to gun out the runner at third. An emphatic ending to secure the Bombers 9-5 victory.
Ithaca College will return to action on Saturday, March 30 in a doubleheader against SUNY Geneseo with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
