CLERMONT, Fla. – The Ithaca College softball team continued to enjoy the nice weather down in Florida on Tuesday as they played two more games as part of THE Spring Games which saw them beat Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) 9-0 in five innings before they fell 1-3 to Carroll University in the nightcap.
Ithaca 9, Mount Saint Mary College 0 (F-5 innings)
Making her first start of the season in the pitching circle, first year
Taylor Brunn was dominant just allowing one hit as IC was able to use the mercy rule against the Knights after the fifth inning. Brunn allowed just one base runner giving up a first inning single to Laura Denato with Brunn also producing a career-best seven strikeouts while earning her first collegiate victory.
The Bombers offense got off to a big start in the top of the first frame as they were able to load the bases up after walks from
Sela Scheinman,
Hudson Hassler and
Elise Waddington before
Kailen Winkelblech drove in three with a bases clearing double. Ithaca's offense would continue to roll going into the second inning adding two more runs.
Sela Scheinman ripped an RBI triple that drove in
Cynthia Ehrenfeld and
Jessie Lopez made it 5-0 when she drove in Scheinman on a sacrifice fly.
It was pretty quiet until the top of the fifth inning when Ithaca added its final four runs, which came on four hits within the stanza. Scheinman continued her strong afternoon leading off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and the bases were loaded up with a
Jessie Lopez bunt single and a
Hudson Hassler walk.
Elise Waddington ripped a two-RBI double to left field fence and
Olivia Comolli drove in an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Bombers finished off the scoring making it 9-0 within the inning when
Ava Rao singled, driving home
Kailen Winkelblech.
Carroll University 3, Ithaca College 1 (F)
The Bombers certainly had their chances as they took on Carroll University and ended up outhitting them by a 7-2 margin, but the Pioneers used the most of their base runners and plated all three runs in the top of the third frame. The first run scored on a passed ball and Kiana Johnson hit a two-RBI single into the outfield gap.
That third inning was the most trouble that
Anna Cornell ran into as she collected eight strikeouts while also inducing five groundball outs along with eight fly outs as she finished giving up two earned runs. Ithaca scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning with
Sydney Miranda hitting an RBI double that plated
Belle de Oliveira. IC loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning as they made the most of three fielding errors, but were unable to punch a run in. Both
Jessie Lopez and
Taylor Andrews each had two hits apiece.
The Bombers improved to 3-3 overall and will play two more games on Tuesday as they will take on Ohio Northern University at 11:15 a.m. and Monmouth College at 1:30 p.m.
