Women's Lacrosse Defeats Scranton, 13-9, in Season Opener

ITHACA, N.Y. – In today's highly anticipated season opener, the Ithaca College women's lacrosse team squared off against the visiting Scranton Royals, which arrived with a 2-0 record, and the Bombers came away with a 13-9 victory at Higgins Stadium.

Ithaca, fresh from a 12-8 season in 2023 that ended in the Liberty League championship game against William Smith, entered the game with determination and a hunger for victory. Head coach Karrie Moore, now in her ninth season at the helm, aimed to guide her team to success and edge closer to becoming the program's all-time winningest coach, a mere 15 wins away from the milestone.

The game unfolded with both teams displaying their offensive and defensive skills. The Bombers' offense faced a tough challenge against Scranton's defense, while Scranton aimed to break through the Bombers defensive lines.

Throughout the match, key players for the Bombers stepped up to make their mark on the game. Sydney Phillips and Lily Cody led the offense, each scoring three goals, while Maddie Hall contributed two goals of her own. Maizy Veitch and Chloe Nordyke also made significant contributions, with Veitch adding an assist and Nordyke finding the back of the net.

Caroline Wise showcased her playmaking abilities with two assists and leading the team with 11 draw controls and five groundballs. Lexi Kellish was pivotal with three draw controls.

Defensively, Ithaca put forth a strong effort, led by goalkeeper Lexi Held, who recorded an impressive 15 saves. The team collectively caused 11 turnovers, with Kellish, Phillips, and Kaitlyn Russell each contributing two, and Olivia Puppo and Maggie Mandel added one turnover apiece.

The third quarter was the turning point in the game, with the Bombers pouring on an offensive onslaught that saw them score seven goals to Scranton's two.

The Bombers' dominant second half led them to a 13-9 victory and despite a slow start, they were able to take over the game opening the season strong.

Looking ahead, Ithaca sets its sights on the upcoming matchup against Brockport next week, slated for Saturday, March 2 at 2 p.m.
