Descalso Notches Two Goals to Send No. 22 Field Hockey Past Skidmore in Liberty League Semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 22 Ithaca College field hockey team will play for its second straight Liberty League Championship on Sunday afternoon as the Bombers defeated Skidmore College, 2-0, in the semifinal round at Higgins Stadium on Friday afternoon. IC is now 14-5 on the season and winners of eight straight games heading into Sunday's title matchup against No. 20 Rochester or Union.

The Bombers earned a corner just over a minute into the contest and faced an advantage on the insert as Skidmore was whistled for leaving early, but the ensuing IC shot was wide of target and a follow up was stopped on a defensive save. IC would take four more shots in the quarter with only one being on goal as the quarter finished with no score. Skidmore did not take a shot in the first period.

Not much offensive action occurred in the second quarter and the teams went into intermission in a scoreless draw. Ithaca outshot the Thoroughbreds, 7-0, in the half.

IC took a 1-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter as Natalie Descalso scored off a corner attempt. Meara inserted to the top of the circle and Madeleine Goodman found Descalso on the wing for a wide-open shot.

Descalso tacked on an insurance goal with 2:26 left in the game as she snuck a breakaway shot through the Skidmore goalie's legs. Julian Valli picked up the assist on the goal.

For the second straight game against Skidmore, Maeve Clark was not challenged much and only saw one shot, which was wide of target. In the 2-0 regular season win, Clark did not see a shot in the win. She is now 11-4 on the season.

IC outshot Skidmore, 12-1, and posted eight penalty corners to just one for the Thoroughbreds.

At the time this recap was posted, Rochester and Union were tied in double overtime.
